My 5 Top Tips for managing Psoriasis in the Summer

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

For most people, the summer months definitely help their psoriasis. These are the months I use to 'get ahead' and get my skin ready for the winter months. However, there are some things that I'm mindful of, so I don't end up with a flare up. Here are my top tips:

1. Keep any Psoriasis patches covered.

I find any existing patches or newly healed patches will burn if I sit out in the sun. Therefore, I always wear linen shirts to keep me cool but protected.

2. Continue to moisturise everywhere!

It's tempting to become more relaxed on moisturising as your skin recovers. However this is the time to really make sure your skin is in tip top condition for the cold winter months. I apply moisturiser everywhere, from my scalp to my feet and it helps so much.

3. Give your scalp a break

As tempting as it is, try and let your hair dry naturally. There are lots of products that you can use to give your hair some texture and allow you to style it once it's dry. Let your scalp recover from the months of hair drying and central heating.

4. Wear long sleeve tops if you're conscious of patches

I used to love getting a tan, but if my skin has a flare up in the winter and I'm left with paler patches as my skin heals.

5. Drink smart

I'm not going to be a party pooper and say don't enjoy a nice cold beer. BUT if you're not compensating by drinking plenty of water, you can leave your skin dehydrated. As a minimum I drink at least 1.5 litres (water not tequila!) a day and increase this if I know I'm going to be sitting in the sun having a few margaritas!

Enjoy this beautiful weather everyone and I hope these tips help you manage your skin! As always, feel free to leave a comment with any questions!
