Why does SPF make me break out ?

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

If you're reading this, then I'm guessing you've tried wearing sunscreen but the break out from it has caused you to shove it to the back of the bathroom cupboard! You are not alone! Unfortunately wearing sun screen can often clog pores in the skin, due to the extra layer of product. Add sweat and the result is irritation and spots. However, SPF should be a vital part of your skincare everyday, all year round!

NEED A REMINDER WHY SPF IS VITAL FOR YOUR REGIME?

  1. It protects your skin from harmful UV rays and stops any burning, especially for those who are fair skinned.

  2. Sunscreen lowers the risk of skin cancer so wearing it is a no brainer!

  3. It prevents premature ageing otherwise known as Photoaging. This is when collagen in the skin breaks down and leads to fine lines and sagging.

  4. It helps maintain an even skin tone, reducing skin spots, hyperpigmentation and age spots.

SO HOW DO YOU STOP BREAKOUTS?

Double Cleanse

This is literally when you clean your skin twice. It can be with different cleansers or the same one. It's completely up to you! The theory behind this ritual is that the first cleanse removes your makeup and sunscreen. A cream cleanser that's wiped away with a warm muslin cloth is brilliant for this step. The second step is designed to clean your skin thoroughly, using a cleanser designed for your main skin concerns.

Top 3 First Step Cleansers

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

Yes to Coconut Oil Cleansing Balm

Top 3 Second Step Cleansers

If you have Dry Skin...

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser Water Gel

If you have Sensitive Skin...

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

If you have Mature Skin...

Peter Thomas Roth Anti-aging cleansing gel

If you have Oily Skin...

Cerave Foaming Cleanser

If you have Problematic Skin...

Mario Badescu Glycolic Grapefruit Cleansing Lotion

Use Toner after Cleansing

Using a toner on your skin will mean every last spot of your makeup and SPF is removed. They remove any excess oil and tighten pores, meaning that you're less likely to clog your skin and suffer with spots. It's an essential step especially in the hotter months when you're mixing excess oil from sweat with dirt and bacteria on the skin!

Here are my recommendations:

If you have Dry Skin...

Avene Gentle Toning Lotion

If you have Sensitive Skin...

La Roche-Posay Soothing Lotion

If you have Mature Skin...

L'Oreal Age Perfect Refreshing Toner

If you have Oily Skin...

Clinique Clarifying Lotion 4

If you have Problematic Skin...

Alpha-H Clear Skin Tonic

Use a Face Mask

Finally if you're still really suffering with blocked pores, you need to add a deep cleaning face mask into your regime a 2-3 times a week. This will give your daily cleansing routine a boost and remove any excess dirt that may be left behind.

Here's a rundown of the best masks around!

Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment

Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask

L'Oreal Pure Clay Glow Mask

So there you have it, your total guide to ensuring you're skin safe everyday, all day, without the blemishes! It might require an extra step or two but I promise you, the long term health benefits are totally worth it!
